AbstractPeter Goettelmann left Hesse-Darmstadt to "escape with his family from a continent he viewed as too corrupt for redemption." In Milwaukee the Goettelmann family merged with the aristocratic Schwieckhard family from Alsace, leading to the establishment of the A. Gettelman Brewing Company in 1871 on the site of the original Schweickhard Brewery.
