AbstractHarttmann "was intensely involved in a significant phase of United State history. In Kansas, where he resided for thirty years, he, along with many other German settlers who had survived the failed 1848 revolution, advocated a state free of slavery. . . . A close examination of Harttmann's life reveals more about historical events than do the lives of many famous personalities of his day." Includes information on the Emigrant Aid Company, which "recognized that recent Germans of the revolutionary generation would be ideal allies for keeping the state of Kansas free of slavery. . . . The Germans formed a significant block of settlers and voters who helped to turn the tide against the established proslavery forces."
