AbstractThe examples in this essay point to a pattern of involvement by Germans in American museums in the nineteenth century that emphasized, among other things, the educational potential of museum materials. Historians of education have indicated that science in public as well as private schools derived more from German than English philosophy and practice in the nineteenth century. There was an evident parallel in museums, which pulled and in some cases were pushed by local school officials and teachers to provide resources and special instruction. The German influence, however, was inevitably complex, and the outcomes were unpredictable.
