AbstractWhile focusing primarily on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and addressing Afro-German interaction in a geographically restricted area, it is hoped that this essay will not only suggest topics by also encourage research into those topics. By moving beyond an analysis of German attitudes towards Africans in the context of slavery and abolition to the exploration of other social, economic, and cultural contexts in which Afro-German contact occurred, it is possible to gain new perspectives on the current interplay of ethnicity and race and perhaps develop better strategies for coexisting in an increasingly multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-racial world.
