AbstractFrom 1939 to 1943, about 185 refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe found refuge at Scattergood, a temporary hostel hosted in what had been a Quaker boarding school near West Branch, Iowa. Among them were Jews, but also political opponents of Hitler's regime, religious figures, professionals, merchants, journalist, artists, elderly ladies and single young men, students and children. This book examines the refugees' backgrounds, their flight from Europe, their arrival in the United States and the process through which they formed identities in America.
