AbstractRecounts the author's search for the name of an ancestral village in Alsace. Christian Schmitt immigrated to America with his parents and several siblings in 1829, and lived in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania; Marion County, Ohio; and eventually in Barton Township, Washington County, Wisconsin (here the name was listed as Smith in the census of 1850 and 1860). The author eventually discovered an obituary that listed the town of Hatten as Christian's birthplace. Christian's second son, George, enlisted in Company E, 27th Volunteer Wisconsin Regiment, in 1862.
