AbstractWhile marked by all Christians since the 5th century A. D., the special import of [the twelve days of Christmas] arose in pre-Christian Germany and spread gradually throughout Western Europe. This even dozen very distinctive feast days. . . represent a remarkable synthesis of ancient Germanic belief, Christian doctrine, and popular piety. Discusses cleansing rituals, talking animals, manifestations of "die Frau," visits by the "raging hosts" in Mecklenburg and Pomerania, and the custom of "lead pouring" as fortune telling.
