AbstractThis essay promotes the argument that "given the harsh realities of rural life in the Westerwald, people moved to Wisconsin in the mid-nineteenth century to improve their economic circumstances and to avoid falling into the ranks of the desperate poor." Examines the German immigrant community whose center was the village of Reeseville in Dodge County, Wisconsin, during the period from 1845 to 1880.
