AbstractHermann Oswald Hugo Schmidt grew up in Dahl, near Hagen, close to the Dutch border. In 1854, when he was fifteen years old, he left home to visit his sister and brother-in-law, Matilda and Henry Lambach, in Davenport, Iowa. In 1904 his son Oswald, along with a partner, purchased the Crescent Macaroni Company. This company stayed in the Schmidt family for four generations.
