AbstractDescribes a January 1901 mission by four African American men from Alabama's Tuskegee Institute to the German Colony of Togo in West Africa. The expedition, organized by Booker T. Washington, was financed by a German business organization that sought to "transform cotton growing in Togo so that it would supply the world market with raw materials for European industry." Includes information on the origins of the Tuskegee Institute, the interests of Germans in the American South, the experience of the Tuskegee expedition in Togo, and the transnational influence of the Tuskegee Institute.
