AbstractOn January 9, 1836, only a few months after having moved from Philadelphia to Columbia, South Carolina, in order to assume the chair for History and Political Econmy at South Carolina College, Francis Lieber and his wife bought their first two slaves. Keil examines how German immigrants in the mid-nineteenth century perceived of slavery, and describes Francis Lieber's personal and practical encounter with and analysis of race and slavery.
