AbstractOverview examines emigration from the Rheinland-Palatinate during America's colonial period and in the 19th century, including beginnings, mass migration to New York in 1709, Pennsylvania, the "Redemptioner System," settlements and ethnic cohesion, the Ephrata Cloister, acculturation and assimilation, economic and social background, reasons for emigrating, attitudes held by the German states, chain migration, organized emigration (Mainzer Adelsverein), farming and trades practiced by German Americans, the press and literature, societies, and nativism and politics.
