AbstractEmil Baensch was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, in 1857, son of a refugee from Germany who arrived in America in 1848. Emil studied law and was appointed in 1888 by Governor Rusk to serve as county judge in Manitowoc County. Baensch served as a Republican Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin from 1895 through 1899, and ran unsuccessfully for governor against Robert La Follette, Sr. in 1904. He had an interest in German contributions to American life and was involved in "the gathering of reminiscences and the preservation of letters written by the German immigrants to their homeland."
