AbstractTruempler was born in 1886 in Zurich, Switzerland and studied physics, mathematics, and astronomy first at the University of Zurich and then at the University of Goettingen. He graduated magna cum laude in 1910. In 1918 he was offered a position at the Lick Observatory, operated by the University of California. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1921, at which time he dropped the umlaut from the spelling of his name.
