AbstractIn the second half of the seventeenth century, thousands of Swiss left Switzerland and settled throughout southern Protestant Germany along the Rhine River, especially in the Palatine and Alsace, which had lost much population in the Thirty Years' War. Most adhered to their Reformed faith if possible and parich registers will indicate either "Swiss" or the more specific location of origin. Additional sources for finding the place of origin include (German) town citizenship records, and Swiss synod and parish court records, especially because Swiss citizenship is held at the municipal level and thus those surnames remain over long periods of time.
