AbstractHolter immigrated from Mecklenburg to America following initial seminary studies in Bavaria at the Neuendettelsau Mission Society. He completed studies at Wartburg Seminary (then in Mendota, Ill.) and subsequently founded 13 congregations in Dakota Territory, and 12 additional congregations in Rhode Island, New Jersey and New York. The author's research connects Holter with the fictional Moene Markow, created by Johannes and Theodor Gillhoff in a sequel publication to the immigrant letters of the fictional Juernjakob Swehn.
