AbstractBegun in 1742 and written by successive members of the clergy, the Bethlehem [Pennsylvania] Diary tells the story of the first years of the Moravians' major settlement in Colonial America. It tells how the settlement was established in what was then a wilderness; how various nationalities -- German, Swiss, Czech, English, American, Dutch, African American and Native American -- learned to live together for one mutual purpose; and how the community reached out to influence others far beyond its borders.
