AbstractThis historical fiction book tells of an 8-year-old immigrant boy from Germany who spends his first year after arrival (1920-21) working in northern Wisconsin for a logging company. His job is to clear off the iced trails used by the horse-drawn logging sleds. The author's research has allowed him to weave together elements of the immigration passage, the logging industry, life in the northern Wisconsin winter, and other aspects of the historical and cultural context.
