| Notes | Has series title page preceding volume title page. The latter is stamped Northwestern University Library, Watertown, Wis. Note inside front cover about error of author's middle initial/name. Author's name mistakenly printed on t.p. as Francis P. Grund. GRUND, Francis Joseph, author, born in Bohemia in 1805; died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 29 September, 1863. He was educated at the polytechnic school in Vienna, and in 1825 became professor of mathematics in the military school at Rio Janeiro, Brazil. He settled in Philadelphia in 1826, and for many years was connected with the press. In 1854 he was appointed United States consul at Antwerp, and in 1860 was transferred to Havre and made diplomatic agent to the south German states. He was chosen editor of the Philadelphia "Age," a Democratic newspaper, in April, 1863, but soon became a Republican and resigned the post. He published, besides numerous essays and addresses, "Exercises in Arithmetic" (Boston, 1833); "Americans in their Moral, Religious, and Social Relations" (1837); "Aristocracy in America" (1839); and a German campaign life of General William Henry Harrison (Philadelphia, 1840); and translated Herschel's "Astronomical Problems." |
