| Abstract | Maximilian Gustav Wülfing was born in Lennep, Germany, February 17, 1802, married Friederike Christiane Schmieding on June 30, 1830, and immigrated with their three young children in 1835. The experiences of the ocean voyage and subsequent years in Cincinnati, Louisville, and St. Louis are expressed in these letters written originally to his mother, and following her death in 1846, to Gustavus' sister, Juliana, still in Lennep. He returned to visit his family in 1852 and died in Lennep. His descendents formed the family association which sponsored the preparation and publication of this volume. (From Introduction.) |
