| Abstract | Schenck, born in Darmstadt, founded the Biltmore Forest School in 1898 at the estate outside Ascheville, North Carolina, at the behest of entrepreneur George W. Vanderbilt, to train foresters for private industry. Disagreements with Vanderbilt led to his departure and the closure of the school in 1913. |
