AbstractStoll's article consists of a biographical sketch of the poet and a criticism of his poems and prose. Stoll claims that Edward's earlier poems do not reflect the Naturalist movement, which was popular in Europe, and that this "symptom" was typical of "large parts of German-American writing in general." Stoll also discusses Edward's later poems, which, he claims, become much more political. Selected poems are included in the article.
