AbstractUsing Milwaukee as an example, Conzen discusses the living conditions of early German emigrants. Milwaukee is seen as a special case and role model - built during the times of emigration, in 1836 at least half of Milwaukee's population was of foreign birth or parentage. The special circumstances of Milwaukee allowed a third way between ghetto and melting pot.
