AbstractGustav Stickley was of German immigrant background. He was among the most successful in applying the new American industrialism through the manufacture of products for the home which were well crafted, modestly priced, and thus available to the middle class. In Stickley's mind, household art was indeed "a national art, a universal art, adapted to the needs of the country. This was to be an art developed by the people, for the people, as a reciprocal joy for the artist and layman."
