AbstractAdolf Friedrich Theodor was born May 6, 1816 in Rothehütte, Hannover. Education in Clausthal 1828–35 and U. of Göttingen 1835–38. Tutor Grünenplan, Braunschweig, 1838–42. Encouraged by F. K. D. Wyneken to go to America. Ordained May 10, 1843, Hannover. Pastor Washington, D. C., 1843–47. Joined Pennsylvania Synod. Resigned pastorate because cong. was not purely Lutheran. Taught at Columbian College, Washington, D. C., 1847–49; prof. Ft. Wayne Seminary as successor of C. L. A. Wolter 1849–50; prof. Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, 1850–58. Promoted the study and use of English language and an English academy in St. Louis. Advocated closer relations with other Lutheran churches, especially the Norwegian and Tennessee Synods.
