Klara (Rieger) Berens was born Aug. 20, 1851 in Holstein, Missouri, the daughter of Pastor Jos. Rieger, one of the founders of the German Lutheran Synod in America. After studying at the Monticello School in Alton, Illinois, she returned to teach English in Holstein, Mo. Married Pastor August Berens, German-American author, in 1878.
