Donated by Elisabeth (Liesl) Soellner in honor of Ludwig Soellner, Milwaukee, WI (Milwaukee Herold), 1985; inscribed on title page: "Ernst Goerner, Milwaukee, Wis., April 15th 1926." German-American author; Georg(e) Schoener was born in 1864 in Steinach, Baden and immigrated to America in 1890. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1892 after graduating from St. Vincent's Benedictine Seminary in Pittsburgh. Designed a Catholic Church in Rochester, N.Y. where he served as priest from 1899 on. Moved to Oregon in 1910 and then to California. Wrote a book on church architecture in English, and was a dramatist and poet. He was also known in the United States as the "Padre of the Roses" for his experiments in rose breeding, especially in the use of wild species. Only two of his creations survive today however; 'Arrilaga' and 'Schoener's Nutkana'. |
