| MKI Annotation | Julius Segall came to the US with his family in 1872, working first as a peddler and clerk in his father's jewelry store. From 1881 to 1883, he was a student at the Royal Academy in Munich. After returning to the US he established a studio in Milwaukee, making a living from portrait commissions, genre portraits, and religious paintings. He had a studio in St. Paul, Minnesota, from 1890 to 1903, and frequently returned to Europe, but otherwise lived and worked in Milwaukee. Segall was also an amateur poet, publishing a book of German verse in 1920. A life long Socialist, Segall contributed to the Milwaukee Socialist newspaper Vorwärts. Segall was a friend of the German American lithographer Louis Kurz. |
