| MKI Annotation | 2 copies. Emma Clausen was born August 27, 1867, in Husum, Schleswig-Holstein; her death was on August 13, 1969, in Los Angeles, California. In her youth she attended Froebel's Academy before immigrating with her older sister to Canada in 1885. After a failed marriage, Emma came to the United States in 1890 with her two children, Bertha and Greta Ammon, and was employed in Detroit, Michigan, as a kindergarten teacher and nurse. She studied medicine and established a practice in Detroit in 1907. After her retirement in 1922, she moved to Los Angeles, California. She contributed poetry and translations to German American radical newspapers, including the first German translation of Oscar Wilde's "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" (as "Im Gefängnis zu Reading: Eine Ballade von C 3 3") in Robert Reitzel's Der arme Teufel, 1902. A volume of her poetry, Im Voruebergehn, was published in 1956. |
