| Notes | German-American author. From Ward, Bio-Bibliography, 1985: Siller, Frank (orig. Francis von Siller), b. 5-27-1835 in St. Petersburg, Russia, d. 1901 in Milwaukee. Son of German-Russian parents. Attended Gymnasium in Dorpat. Came to America in 1850 with his father and worked on his farm. Went in 1854 to Nebraska with a party of activists bent on preventing that territory from dealing in slavery. Lived among the Indians. Grain broker (1863 on). 1885-90 in Berlin. From 1890 he spent summers in Milwaukee and winters in Gotha, Florida where he owned an orange grove. Wrote essays on national economics and translated works by Heine, Freiligrath, Zuendt, Bodenstedt, Buerger, and others into English. Also trans. from Spanish, Panhellenic and Persian. Wrote English and German poems and translated works by Bret Harte, Ella Wheeler, E. A. Poe, Holmes, Stoddard and Longfellow into German. Longfellow is said to have recognized Siller's translation of "Evangeline" as the best German version of his poem. |
