AbstractForced to auction off their goods, farmer Ehrenreich is overcome with secret shame and bitter anger, and his thoughts turn to Amerika. The family travels to Hamburg and boards a steamship to New York. In New York they are separated from their eldest son, Peter, and must continue on without him. They travel by train to "Kimmstick" (perhaps Kimmswich, Missouri), on the Mississippi River, where they stay briefly at a hotel run by another German. From here they take another steamship to "Greenport," and then overland to "Farm Merryweather im Urwald." Describes their life here, including many interactions with Native Americans.
