AbstractFrom Ward, Bio-Bibliography: "Strubberg, Friedrich Armand (Armand, Farnwald), b. 3-18-1806 in Kassel, d. 4-3-1889 in Gelnhausen. The son of a rich tobacco salesman, he began a business career in 1822 in Bremen in the employ of a firm which dealt with America, thus arousing in him an interest in the U.S. A duel forced him to flee in America in 1826. Returned in 1829 to help his father whose business was near bankruptcy. Returned to America around 1837 and spent the next 17 years as an adventurer and representative of German business firms. Travelled to N.Y., Baltimore, Richmond, Va., Havana, Cuba, and after killing a man in a second duel he fled to the Southern states under the assumed name: Schubert. Earned a diploma as a physician in Louisville, Ky., then took part in the founding of Fredericksburg, Texas by the Mainzer Adelsverein. Bruemmer claims Strubberg served in the Mexican War (1846-48). Went to Arkansas in 1848 to care for the sick during a cholera epidemic. Intending to settle in Camden and marry, he was stung in one eye by an insect. His eye injury induced him to return to Germany in 1854."
