"Erlaeuternder Anhang" explains North American words and place names used in the poem.
NotesGerman-American author. [From Ward, Bio-Bibliography, 1985: Kirchhoff, Theodor (aka Der Dichter vom Goldenen Tore), b. 1-8-1828 in Utersen, Holstein, d. 3-2-1899 in San Francisco. Fought as an officer in the Schleswig-Holstein struggle against Denmark 1848-50. Immigrated to America in 1851. Held various occupations: piano teacher in St. Louis, photographer, postmaster, bookkeeper, upholsterer, bartender in the western and southern states. In 1859 he opened a profitable business in northern Texas which was destroyed during the Civil War. Travelled then to Scotland, England, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, then returned in 1863 to America. Made several long trips (Nicaragua and Panama) by stagecoach to Idaho and Oregon and in 1888 to the Sandwich Islands. In 1869 he opened a sucessful jewelry store and optics business which he pursued until 1886 in San Francisco. Freelance writer from 1886 until his death. Made his last trip to Germany in 1897.
