MKI AnnotationFriedrich Wilhelm Herzberger was born on October 23, 1859, in Baltimore, Maryland. After graduating from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, his first parish experience was in the northwest region of Arkansas. He and his wife, Martha Schroeter, served in the area of Johnson County where a colony of Germans had been moved from Wisconsin by the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad Company to develop the land. During his four years in this area Herzberger started six congregations and served as the first pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alexander, Arkansas. He then held pastorates in Carson, Kansas; and Hammond, Indiana, before becoming the Lutheran Missouri Synod's first City Missionary (in St. Louis) in 1899. He was noted for working with many missionary and charitable causes. He died on August 26, 1930, in St. Louis, Missouri.
