AbstractFirst copy has library pocket inside back cover: Public Library, South Milwaukee, Wis. Ruppius, Otto, b. 2-1-1819 in Glochau, Silesia, d. 6-25-1864 in Berlin. After a varied early career became a left-wing journalist in 1845 and in 1848 fled to America in order to escape imprisonment. After a few years of music teaching in Lexington, Kentucky, he returned to journalism in 1853 when he went to Milwaukee and edited Gradaus, then to New York where he edited the New Yorker Staatszeitung. In 1859 he returned to Kentucky to edit the Westliche Blaetter in Louisville which he transferred to St. Louis a few months later. Went to Leipzig in 1861 where he wrote Novellen on American life for the Gartenlaube. (Ward, Bio-Bibliography, 1985.)
