| Abstract | [From Ward, Bio-Bibliography, 1985: Richter, Fernande Anna Therese Franziska Auguste (Edna Fern), nee Osthaus, b. 2-21-1861 in Roessing near Nordstemmen/Hannover, d. 1-20-1941 in St. Louis. Early education by private tutors, then spent 2 years in the cloister, Sacre Coeur near Aachen where she learned French. Lived with parents in Hildesheim and Osnabrueck where she gave music lessons. Came with bankrupt parents to America in 1881 where she first lived on a farm in southwest Missouri, then in St. Louis. Married in 1882, but divorced in 1887. Married Dr. Georg Richter in 1894. 1893-95 with St. Louis welfare board. Traveled in 1896 to various American cities, lecturing on literature and social questions, especially women's emancipation. Sec'y. of the St. L. Schilller-Verein (1900). Acclaimed as one of German-America's finest writers at an Edna Fern evening celebration held at the Northside Turnhalle in Chicago in 1908. A poem in her honor is attributed to Martin Drescher. Part of the ms. to her novel, Dietrich in Amerika, was printed in M. Singer's Der Zeitgeist before it was suppressed during WWI.
