Abstract | From the Preface, written by Armin Nix: "Robert Nix (1854-1910) was primarily a scholar and an educator, devoting the greater part of his life to the betterment of the public school system. He held the superintendency of schools in New Ulm, Minnesota, for many years. In Indianapolis, Indiana, he was Supervisor of German from 1894 until his death. His poems represent intellectual diversion begun as a boy not yet fifteen, when he lived alone in the log cabin where his father conducted a store in the Minnesota wilderness many miles from other habitations. While tending to occasional customers during the dead of winter, young Robert had time to reflect, and his vivid imagination soon found expression in poetry. The first attempts were in German. They were published in German papers of Minnesota as early as 1869. . . . This collection of poems has been made and arranged by my sister, Else M. Nix. She has in mind, chiefly, making available in permanent form the majority of her father's poems for his many friends who, during the twenty years that have elapsed since his death, have expressed a desire for a published collection. The short biography that follows will enable the reader to grasp more fully the man, the scholar and the poet. Robert Nix was born in Cleveland, Ohio, February 1, 1854. In 1858 his father, Jacob Nix, departed with his family for New Ulm, Minnesota, a German community, which was first settled by the Chicagoer Landverein in 1854, and by the Cincinnati Turners in 1856. Among the latter were many German refugees who had left the Fatherland during the Revolutions of 1848 and 1849. The town of New Ulm grew into a colony of people who were desirous of working out their Utopian ideals, far removed from close contact with other communities. . . . Robert Nix was an accomplished linguist, having mastered English, German, French, Greek, Latin, and the Scandinavian languages. He read Sanskrit and spoke and wrote the language of the Sioux Indians. . . " |
