AbstractAn illustrated souvenir book of the German Theological School of the Northwest in Dubuque, Iowa. The University of Dubuque Theological Seminary was founded in 1852 to reach out to the many German settlers arriving in the Midwest at that time. The seminary provided theological education to those called to serve as evangelists and pastors throughout the Midwest. The school, initially known as Van Vliet Seminary after founder Adrian Van Vliet, was renamed the German Theological School of the Northwest in 1864. In 1870, the seminary was accepted by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church as a theological institution of the church. Although Van Vliet was Dutch, until 1896 all classes were conducted in German. [http://udts.dbq.edu/about/history.htm]
