AbstractGerman-American author. From Ward, Bio-Bibliography, 1985: Weitling, Wilhelm Christian (orig: Weidling), b. 10-5-1808 in Mageburg, d. 1-22-1871 in N.Y. Born out of wedlock. Married Dorothea Carolina Louise Toedt in N.Y. in 1854. As an apprentice tailor in Paris (1837-41) he became a communist, lived then in Switzerland where in Zuerich he was imprisoned for writing his Evangelium eines armen Suenders. Deported to Prussia, then moved to London, Trier, Brussels and in 1847 to N.Y. Returned to Germany (Berlin) in 1848, then lived in N.Y. (1849 on). His works have been translated into several languages. Karl Marx broke with him in 1846 because of Weitling's Christian brand of communism. Weitling agitated vigorously for his ideas, but finally became disillusioned and turned to astronomy, linguistics and inventing. Ward indicates that Garantieen der Harmonie und Freiheit was first published in 1842.
NotesTitle page has separated, stamped "Carl Doerflinger" [Milwaukee writer, editor, publisher and Freidenker]. On cover is label: "Leihbibliothek und Musikalien-Leihanstalt von Vojta Naprstek, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Gegruendet 1850." [Vojta Naprstek, 1826-1894, "sparked the national life among Czech Americans, not only in Wisconsin but in the entire country. He published his famous Milwaukee Flugblatter there and gave impetus for publishing Czech newspapers in the US." He lived in the U.S. for ten years.] Label inside front cover mostly torn out, from Vojta Naprstek's Leihbibliothek. Also bookplate: "Library of the University of Wisconsin, bequest of George B. Wild, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1870-1941, in memory of his brother, Robert Wild '97, 1875-1926." Donated by Lester Seifert.
