Donated byDeborah Cook: "[The] primer belonged to my maternal grandmother, Elsie Buchen. My grandmother was born in 1900. . . [and she] was first cousin to Phillip Buchen, an advisor and cabinet member in President Ford's administration. Her family moved to Corpus Cristi, Texas, where she continued to study German in public schools until the beginning of World War I. She once sadly told the story that, at the start of the war, they gathered all school books in the German language and these texts were burned in a very public bonfire in the school yard."
