AbstractThe story ['The Specter Lady of Hawk Castle'] depicts different phases of rural life and of human character, as they manifest themselves in the narrow framework of a hamlet. The theme is, of course, the struggle of good and evil, and its object, to show the triumph of the former in the long run against seemingly overwhelming odds. And, that the picture may be made the brighter and the more attractive, it is exhibited in contrast with the conventions and affectations, the whims and villainies of fashionable society.--Introduction.
