| Abstract | Describes the immigration of a Lutheran congregation from Dresden, Germany, to Perry County, MIssouri, in 1836 under pastor Martin Stephan. Only four of the group's five ships survived the voyage to land in New Orleans. Conditions in Perry County "were harsh, and the settlers were not prepared for the rigors of establishing new farms in virgin territory." Stephan was "deposed as bishop and expelled from the community." Some of the remaining immigrants returned to Europe, leaving in 1841. Some joined other immigrants in Wisconsin, and some went west to Bates County, Missouri. Includes a translation of a German notice in the December 1867 issue of Der Lutheraner "extolling the virtues of Bates County--cheap land, good water, coal and trees." |
