| Abstract | Describes how Civil War Brigadier General Thomas Ewing's Order #11 "forcibly depopulated" Bates County, Missouri, with "all structures, crops, and livestock [being] completely destroyed" as a measure against bushwhackers, or pro-Confederate guerrilla fighters. Those who returned after the Civil War were subject to taxes on unproductive property, leading to a massive sale of land in Bates County. It was around this time "a large number of German immigrants came into these counties [of western Missouri], buying up numerous parcels of land." |
