| Abstract | Ferdinand Stieglitz was born in Lehe (now Bremerhaven), Germany, in 1878. His father had been a merchant mariner with North German Lloyd, and Ferdinand's cousin, Wilhelm Stieglitz, also sailed with North German Lloyd, eventually retiring at Sailors' Snug Harbor in Staten Island, New York. Ferdinand was a journeyman baker in 1895, working on North German Lloyd ships. In March of 1901, Ferdinand deserted his position as 2nd baker aboard the steamer "Karlsruhe," then docked in New York. "Many used their service as a means to emigrate from Germany to settle in North or South America. Close to two hundred men deserted this way in the mid-1800s." Although life in early 20th-century America was difficult, Ferdinand, along with his brother Paul, built a successful bakery business with stores in Brooklyn, New York, and in Jersey City, New Jersey. "But, like many worldwide, they lost it all in the 1929 great Depression." |
