Abstract"Johan and Catherine Kochendorfer were immigrants from Württemberg (near Stuttgart). They had married soon after arriving in America and in May 1862 they began farming in Renville County, Minnesota. On the fateful first day of the [Sioux] Uprising--18 August 1862--the Kochendorfer family numbered seven." Only four children managed to flee and survive. "These four children were placed with three different families in the St. Paul area, grew to adulthood, married, and had between them a total of 28 children." Includes an abridged translation of Catherine and Johan's description of their immigration story.
