| Abstract | Salomon Samuel Elliker was born September 13, 1836, in Kusnacht, Zurich, Switzerland. Ordained a missionary and sent to East Africa in 1861, but contracted Yellow Fever and returned to Switzerland. Came to America in 1862, studying at Mercersburg Seminary in Pennsylvania and Mission House College (now Lakeland University) at Franklin, Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He was ordained in late 1863, serving as pastor in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois. In 1865, he was married to Dorothea Langjahr (1835-1904). Rev. Elliker died in 1916 at the home of his son, the Rev. Samuel Elliker, in Marengo, Iowa. Gottfried Daniel Elliker, also a son of Salomon and Dorothea, was born September 5, 1872, in Independence Township, Jasper, Iowa. He married Emilie Muehlmeier (1872-1964) on October 9, 1895. Rev. Gottfried Elliker was pastor at the German Reformed Church in Waukon, Iowa from 1896 to 1910. He then lived from 1910 to 1913 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where he was Secretary of the Tri-Synod Home Mission Board and served as interim pastor of St. John's. From September 1913 to 1926 he was pastor at the Swiss Reformed Church in New Glarus, Wisconsin. He then returned to serve again in Waukon, Iowa, until his death in 1928. |
