AbstractThis article sets the collective emotional rush with which German Americans marshaled for the Civil War in a wider cultural context, taking as its point of departure questions such as: What made these men fight? Why did they risk their lives for a country that did not welcome them wholeheartedly? And what made women send their loved ones into battle?

Focusing on German-speaking Unionists, the author examines how notions of masculinity and femininity had a decisive bearing on why and how these ethnic Americans chose to fight, and how gender operated as an instrument for legitimizing power and justifying violence.
