MKI AnnotationThis paper describes a quantitative analysis of the effect of English contact on Ohio Pennsylvania German, a subdialect of Pennsylvania German. The study focuses on the number of Anglicisms present in the lexicon of an Old Order Amish community in Holmes County, Ohio, the extent of their phonological and morphological integration, and their quantitative ranking according to word classes. Extreme numerical deviations in the findings of past studies on Pennsylvania German seem to suggest that a different methodological approach is needed to assess more accurately what percentage of the basic vocabulary is still present. By exploring which borrowings represent a community norm vs. merely idiosyncratic usage, a more accurate assessment of the degree of lexical transfer is achieved. What was found is a small core of high frequency lexical items of English origin and some widespread international loans and homologous types perceived as borrowings from English, all of which are universally utilized by the entire community.
