Abstract"In the year 1881 appeared a little book entitled Entwurf einer Weltsprache für alle Erdbewohner (Plan of a Universal Language for all the Inhabitants of the World). The author of this little volume [is] the Rev. John Martin Schleyer, of Litzelstetten, near Constanz, in Baden. . . . [T]he little book of Schleyer . . . is at present published in more than fifteen languages, [and] there are over 200 societies in existence all over the world whose members learn and practice this new language, Volapuk (vol-a, the world's; puk, language). . . . When the writer of this [article] was in Constanz, in September last, for the purpose of forming the personal acquaintance of Mr. Schleyer, the latter had just received letters of congratulation from Paris, conveying to him the cheerful news that Volapik had been adopted as a regular branch of study in the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales. . . . In a series of papers for this journal, I shall consider the chief objections to a universal language, and give a short account of the grammar and principles of Mr. Schleyer's Volapuk."
