AbstractBased on close readings of two anti-war events launched by the German Society of New Orleans—the “Mass Meeting for the Furtherance of American Neutrality” in January 1915 and the “Red Cross Bazaar” in April 1915—this article argues that German Americans in New Orleans appealed to a broad coalition in their anti-war and neutrality efforts, reaching across existing divisions built on ethnicity, political persuasion, class, and gender.
